Desmond Ridder’s Historic College Career Started With a Porta-Potty Phone Call

The story of how Desmond Ridder went from unknown to a first round pick in the NFL draft is really quite unbelievable. The former college football player started his career with just one game, but took it up another level when he caught an interception and set a school record for yards returned in that single first-ever start.

Desmond Ridder, a former quarterback for the Cincinnati Bearcats, is certainly hoping that his NFL career will take him to some spectacular locations. Certainly, his college one did. He not only guided UC to back-to-back undefeated regular seasons, but he also assisted them in becoming the first non-power five club to reach the College Football Playoff.

However, his path to become probably Cincinnati’s greatest quarterback began in a less-than-ideal location.

It all started in a porta-potty.

With the Cincinnati Bearcats, Desmond Ridder enjoyed a spectacular collegiate career.

In 2017, Desmond Ridder was a redshirt freshman at Cincinnati. He then became a backup in 2018. Ridder, though, took over for Hayden Moore during UC’s opening game of the season and remained at the position for the remainder of his career.

At initially, he was basically a game manager. Ridder didn’t give the ball over, but he couldn’t help the Bearcats win games. They triumphed because of the great team he was surrounded by.

In 2019, the quarterback struggled, completing just 55.1 percent of his throws. Things began to alter after a sluggish start in 2020. In the last seven games of the season, Ridder passed for 1,699 yards, 13 touchdowns, and two interceptions. His contributions contributed to Cincinnati’s undefeated regular-season record and a Peach Bowl loss to Georgia.

He did, however, have a breakthrough year in 2021. Ridder passed for 3,334 yards, 30 touchdowns, and eight interceptions in his first season as a starter. Cincinnati, headed by Luke Fickell, was undefeated in the regular season and reached the College Football Playoff for the second year in a row.

Ridder finished his collegiate career as the all-time leader in total yards (12,418) and throwing touchdowns at the University of California (87). His 44 career victories ranked third all-time among collegiate quarterbacks.

Desmond Ridder was a three-star prospect before his collegiate success. Only one FBS offer came his way: Cincinnati.

When Tommy Tuberville was still the head coach, the Bearcats started recruiting Ridder, and his staff requested to see him throw on a random Friday. It was, however, the Friday of Kentucky Derby weekend, as ESPN pointed out. Ridder, a Louisville native, intended to attend the day-before event at Churchill Downs.

So the young quarterback threw for UC in the morning before heading to the track later in the day. He did get a call while he was hanging around there, however. There weren’t many peaceful places to be discovered, but Ridder did find one: a porta-potty.

He immediately dashed into the portable bathroom and accepted Cincinnati’s lone FBS offer.

It marked the start of a long and successful career with the Bearcats.

Is it possible for Desmond Ridder to have a successful NFL career?

Given that Desmond Ridder is expected to be a first-round choice in the NFL Draft, his professional career will most certainly begin in a more dignified setting than a porta-potty. But will he be able to succeed at that level?

Ridder isn’t going into the draft with the same kind of fanfare as Trevor Lawrence or even Joe Burrow. Tom Brady, on the other hand, did not.

That’s not to assume Ridder will be as successful as the NFL’s greatest player, but he came into college as an underdog. He subsequently went from being a game manager to one of college football’s finest quarterbacks. In the professionals, he’ll be able to do the same thing.

Ridder is one of the top pre-snap quarterbacks available in the NFL Draft in 2022. He’ll research his opponents and make them pay for it on the field.

The 6-foot-4-inch athlete is also ideal for today’s professional game. He doesn’t have a big arm, and as a passer, he has certain limitations. The Bearcats mythology, on the other hand, is on the move. During his tenure at UC, he often shown his ability to make throws from outside the pocket. Ridder’s legs may also be used to do injury. During his collegiate career, he rushed for over 2,100 yards.

Will Desmond Ridder reach the pinnacle of his NFL career? Will he be the first QB to win a Super Bowl? That’s difficult to tell right now, but he’s worked hard to go to some unique locations.

Drake claims that he basically began from the ground up.
