Greg Norman Challenges ‘Outrageous’ PGA Tour Ban Threats in Fiery Memo

-

Greg Norman, the famed golfer and ex-coach of Tiger Woods, called out PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan for what he considers to be “outrageous” threats. What are your thoughts on this memo?

The “pro golfers names” is a memo that was sent by Greg Norman to the PGA Tour. The memo addresses the ban threats from pro golfers who have been outspoken about their refusal to follow the tour’s new rules for players’ names.

Greg Norman Challenges 'Outrageous' PGA Tour Ban Threats in Fiery Memo

So that wasn’t exactly Greg Norman’s Super Golf League’s greatest week, was it? Phil Mickelson’s remarks didn’t improve matters, and what Lefty mistook for an apology wasn’t any better. Then there’s the reality that more and more of the world’s best players, like world No. 1 Jon Rahm, world No. 2 Collin Morikawa, Rory McIlroy, and Justin Thomas, have dedicated their loyalty to the PGA Tour.

Norman was seeking to keep himself and the SGL in the battle, which many say is all but done, while all of this drama unfolded during the high-profile Genesis Invitational at legendary Riviera Country Club, a tournament sponsored by none other than Tiger Woods.

Golf.com revealed on Wednesday that Norman wrote a statement that was sent to players and agents last Friday at Riviera, a message that comprised seven points and 25 bullets. And what was the memo’s title? Players that join LIV Golf cannot be barred from the PGA Tour.

That’s not exactly subtle, is it?

PGA Circuit Commissioner Jay Monahan has been threatening players who want to play on a breakaway tour, notably the Premier Golf League or the Super Golf League, with expulsion for the last two years. He allegedly said in a required players meeting on Tuesday at the Honda Classic that anybody on the fence about joining another circuit should “walk out that door now,” doubling down on his position.

However, Norman, a 20-time PGA Tour champion, claims in his statement that the PGA Tour cannot legally exclude anybody since doing so “would violate antitrust laws, its own non-profit status, its own rules, and more.” He also said that he believes the Super Golf League and the PGA Tour can coexist in the future, but that he would not tolerate “egregious acts of bullying.” The two-time Open Championship winner also advised players to receive any threats of a suspension in writing.

“We urge you to seek that the PGA Tour supply you with these threats in writing, as well as written opinions from its outside counsel stating that these restrictions are valid and enforceable.” We wouldn’t be surprised if the Tour refused to do so.”

In a communication to PGA Tour players, Greg Norman said:

The PGA Tour, Norman said, is “the long-standing monopolist over professional golf,” and “players should not be burdened by these ludicrous threats.”

While some believe the PGA Tour and the Super Golf League’s prolonged feud is nearing an end, Greg Norman continues to fling blows. Now all we have to do is wait and see what the following round will bring.
