‘He Misses a lot of Layups’

This article is about Chandler Parsons, a professional basketball player. He plays for the Memphis Grizzlies and Houston Rockets in the National Basketball Association (NBA). He missed more than 40% of his three point shots this season.

The “missed layup gif” is a video that shows LeBron James missing a lot of layups.

Zach Wilson, the rookie quarterback for the New York Jets, had an up and down first season. There were moments of greatness, but there was also a lot of shoddy play. With such a wild season, it’s no wonder that defensive coaches who faced the former BYU quarterback had conflicting feelings about him coming into the 2022 NFL season.

The rookie season of Zach Wilson

QB Zach Wilson of the New York Jets had a rookie season similar to that of many other NFL quarterbacks. There were some highlights and plenty of lowlights. It was a year in which superstars like Peyton Manning and flops like David Carr had identical rookie seasons.

Wilson started 13 games for Gang Green after being selected with the No. 2 overall selection by the Jets. Wilson had a 3-10 record as a starter in 2021, but the squad had many of flaws, so all of the losses weren’t his fault.

Wilson threw for 2,334 yards on 213 of 383 passes (55.6 percent). He also threw 11 interceptions and nine touchdowns. The quarterback carried the ball 29 times for 185 yards and four touchdowns on the ground. Wilson was sacked 44 times by opposing defenders.

That final figure is very striking. The Jets’ offensive line isn’t poor at all. In PFF’s final 2021 rankings, the unit was ranked 11th. Trevor Lawrence was dismissed 32 times, Justin Fields was sacked 36 times, and Mac Jones was sacked 28 times.

A lot is riding on Wilson’s progress heading into the 2022 season. The Jets had a strong draft this summer and may have a club capable of competing for a Wild Card position. That is, assuming Wilson can make the transition from backup quarterback to decent starter.

Wilson received mixed evaluations from anonymous defensive coaches.

Zach Wilson gives a speech. I spoke with a few of defensive coaches who played against him last season (diff teams fwiw). “Few people can whip that hard, which is why he can toss it off the platform. I’d want to see him do it more often. Instead of spending so much time in the pocket…”

Mike Girardi of NFL Network recently tweeted that he talked with two defensive coaches (from separate teams) who both faced Zach Wilson and the New York Jets in 2021. Wilson’s coaches (anonymously) had some positive things to say about him, but they also had some severe concerns.

Wilson’s first coach remarked of him:

Few people can whip that hard, which is why he can toss it over the stage. I’d want to see him do it more often. Rather than spending so much time in the pocket. He hauled in a lot of bags. There are far too many. Don’t be frightened to go exploring. Perhaps he didn’t believe he could since he was injured early in the season. But, if the line doesn’t improve dramatically, I’d advise him to do a bit more.

Coach two agreed with the previous coach’s assessment of arm strength and sacks. He also said that the return of LT Mekhi Becton, the No. 11 overall selection in 2020, as well as the other offensive weapons the Jets acquired in the summer could help:

They need Becton to play left tackle. Zach will be a lot safer in the pocket now that Tomlinson is in place. And they’re definitely counting on Becton; otherwise, one of those tackles at No. 4 would have been taken. His arm is impressive, yet he often misses layups. He has to work on his footwork and drastically improve his perception of the defense. Last year, they provided him with some answers. He just did not employ them. Take a look at how many sacks he snatched. The new weaponry should be beneficial. A year ago, he was throwing to some JAGs (just a man). If he doesn’t look better this year, I’ll be astonished. What is his limit? It’s much too early to know. They were terrible last year, and he was much worse with them. Because of this, it’s an unfavorable assessment.

With Wilson’s status as a legitimate NFL quarterback still up in the air, next season will reveal if the Jets made the correct decision or whether they should go back to the drawing board.

In 2022, the New York Jets will debut their offense.

In 2022, there’s a high possibility Zach Wilson will be surrounded by one of the league’s most dynamic offenses. While this may be beneficial to his growth, it also means that he will have no more excuses.

Mekhi Becton, another first-round choice from last year, should start on the offensive line with Alijah Vera-Tucker. Last season’s top lineman, Connor McGovern, returns at center, while free agent Laken Tomlinson joins breakthrough starter George Fant on the left side.

Wilson’s offensive weaponry also received a significant increase this summer.

Tight end Tyler Conklin and running backs Michael Carter, Ty Johnson, and Tevin Coleman all return from last season, as do wide receivers Elijah Moore, Corey Davis, Denzel Mims, and Braxton Barrios.

The Jets added free agency tight end C.J. Uzomah and draft selections WR Garrett Wilson, RB Breece Hall, and TE Jeremy Ruckert to that group.

For 2022, the Jets offense is stacked, and a strong quarterback may succeed with this group. The issue now is whether Zach Wilson is a decent quarterback.
