It’s No Joe Namath Guarantee, but Jimmy Butler Comes Close When It Comes to the Boston Celtics

-

Jimmy Butler has been the MVP-type player for his team, but last night he was widely considered responsible for the Timberwolves’ loss. Can Jimmy bounce back this time?

The scene has been set. The NBA playoffs are down to four teams. In Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Finals on Tuesday, the top-seeded Miami Heat face the rising Boston Celtics.

Despite the fact that the No. 2 Celtics are the preseason favorite, Heat standout Jimmy Butler isn’t buying it. He didn’t quite go full Joe Namath and ensure a series victory, but he got close.

Butler is in his third season with the Heat and is preparing for his second participation in the Eastern Conference Finals. He’s the Celtics’ most recent superstar. In a first-round sweep, the Celtics defeated Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant. After a difficult seven-game series, they sent Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo.

Butler and the Heat are anticipating a tough series that will showcase excellent defense, something is sorely missing in today’s NBA. That sort of contest excites the 10-year NBA veteran.

“I believe both teams will play a lot of defense,” Butler said, according to Anthony Chiang of The Miami Herald. “I like games from the 1990s. That you are really protecting someone. You’re removing the three-point line and playing inside the three-point line instead. You’re getting back, stopping, and doing a lot of physical activity.

“It matches their style of play.” It also matches the way we want to play.”

In the last week of the regular season, the Heat clinched the No. 1 seed, ending with a 53-29 record, two games ahead of Boston. Despite the fact that the Heat defeated the Celtics in the Eastern Conference Finals two seasons ago, Miami coach Erik Spoelstra claimed there aren’t many parallels between then and now.

“It’s unique,” Spoelstra said. “Because our squad is unique, we prepared differently with them.” It’s not like both teams have the same 15 players.”

‘We’re going to win against the Celtics,’ Butler says.

Namath and his New York Jets stunned the world in Super Bowl 3 when they defeated the Baltimore Colts despite being huge underdogs. That happened after the Jets quarterback predicted victory at a news conference before to the team’s 16-7 victory.

Butler didn’t use the term “guarantee” as much as Namath, but he came close. He is unconcerned about the Celtics being the favorites. He claims that none of his teammates do as well.

“What I like most about this squad is that nobody cares who anyone else selects because we know we can win,” Butler said, according to The Miami Herald. “Those are the kind of folks I’d want to go to war with….” We’re going to battle it out, and we’re going to win.”

That sounds more confident than arrogant. Butler has every reason to be optimistic. He guided his club to the top seed and then to series victories against the Atlanta Hawks and Philadelphia 76ers.

The Celtics will be Miami’s most difficult opponent. Over the previous three months, no NBA team has been hotter than Boston. The Celtics seek to keep their hot streak going against the Heat after a hard matchup with the Bucks. The victor of the Celtics/Bucks series was widely anticipated to represent the Eastern Conference in the NBA Finals in 2022.

Butler isn’t convinced.
