Patrick Mahomes Reveals His Father Suggested He Quit Playing Football Following a Less-Than-Stellar Experience at the University of Texas

-

The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback and his father were both at the NFL Scouting Combine. Patrick Mahomes took the stage and revealed a story that had been told before, but didn’t seem like it would resonate as much as it did with the media. Here’s what happened:

When you consider the chances of a prospect actually playing in the NFL, the odds of a quarterback like Patrick Mahomes ever getting a shot to start in the league are small. If you think he has a shot, you’re either relying on a lucky break or haven’t been paying attention to the player. In 2017, Mahomes threw for 4,267 yards and 48 touchdowns as a true freshman at Texas Tech. He had never taken a snap from under center before, so the fact that he performed so well so quickly should lead you to believe he has a chance.

The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback told ESPN’s Adam Schefter that his father, Pat Mahomes, gave him the advice to quit after his freshman year at Texas Tech. The elder Mahomes, an engineering professor at the school, had his son try out for the team, but the pair did not see eye to eye on the young quarterback’s potential.

At 25, Kansas City Chiefs superstar Patrick Mahomes is already a three-time Pro Bowler, two-time All-Pro, NFL MVP, Super Bowl champion and MVP, and last year he signed the richest contract in American sports history. He is probably the best quarterback in the NFL today, and has made a name for himself (and made a lot of money) off the field with his many promotions. It’s hard to imagine football without him, isn’t it? But it was almost a reality, as Mahomes recently revealed that after he didn’t have the best experience in high school, his father suggested he quit football to focus on other sports. In a recent podcast for health and fitness company WHOOP, Mahomes discussed many topics, including an experience he had in high school that made him seriously question his football future. Apparently, the experiment was so unsuccessful that his father, Patrick Mahomes Sr. who played 11 seasons in Major League Baseball, even suggested to his son that he give up football and concentrate on other sports. I came into my sophomore year at the University of Texas and they sent me to play fullback. I knew I wasn’t going to be a security guard, my dad said as we drove home: You need to focus on baseball and basketball. I thought about it, but mostly I didn’t want to be there to play with all my friends when football season started. So I was just trying to be a quarterback. Patrick Mahomes And the rest, as they say, is history.

After his sophomore year at Texas Tech, he realized he could become a professional quarterback.

. Mahomes was a three-star recruit at Whitehouse (Texas) High School before going to Texas Tech. He started his first season in 2014 as a reserve, but still started while starter Davis Webb suffered multiple injuries throughout the season. Mahomes played in seven games this season, completing 56.8 percent of his passes for 1,547 yards, 16 touchdowns and four interceptions. He became a regular starter as a sophomore and had a solid season, completing 63.5 percent of his passes for 4,653 yards, 36 touchdowns and 15 interceptions, while also scoring 456 yards and 10 scores on the ground. In an interview with WHOOP, Mahomes said that after the 2015 season, he started thinking that the NFL might be his future. And he lived up to it with an impressive 2016 season. He completed 65.7 percent of his passes for 5,052 yards with 41 touchdowns against 10 interceptions, winning the coveted Sammy Bau Trophy.

Mahomes has already had a successful NFL career

As mentioned, the 25-year-old has been selected to the Pro Bowl three times and named All-Pro twice (once on the first team, once on the second). He was named NFL MVP in 2018, in just his second season in the league, and led the Chiefs to their first Super Bowl victory in 50 years following the 2019 season and was also named Super Bowl MVP for the win over the San Francisco 49ers. In July 2020, Mahomes signed a 10-year contract extension that could pay him about $500 million, and then led the Chiefs’ team to the Super Bowl, where they lost to Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. We have to assume there are more MVP Awards and Super Bowl rings waiting for Mahomes as his career progresses, and it’s really strange to think he’s basically given up on the game.
