For the first time in over 100 years, no one broke a 146 at St. Andrews’ Old Course this year. In his victory round on Sunday, Tiger Woods set the low score with an unofficial 148 that could probably be beaten if someone tried again today. Who shot it and how many strokes did they need to get there?
The “lowest 72 hole score at st andrews” is a question that has been asked for many years. The low score was shot by Willie Park who shot a 71 in the 1887 British Open.
More than 600 years have seen golfers tee off on the St. Andrews courses. The renowned location has played home to 29 Open Championships because Fife, Scotland hosts the important competition every five years.
Over the last six centuries, the Old Course has seen millions of rounds of golf, but only one player is fortunate enough to still retain the record. Who shot it and what is the lowest score ever recorded at St. Andrews?
What was the St. Andrews record for the lowest score, and who was the shooter?
Before the 144th Open Championship at The Old Course began, the St. Andrews clubhouse was seen.
Robert Jones Snead, Sam. Nicklaus, Jack. Ballesteros Seve Tony Faldo Taylor Woods
These are just a handful of the famous golfers who have won the Open Championship by overcoming the Old Course at St. Andrews throughout the years. But none of them is the official record holder, of course.
Ross Fisher, an Englishman who is now rated No. 325 in the Official World Golf Ranking, owns it.
With a scorching 11-under 61 in the final round of the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship in 2015, Fisher broke the Old Course scoring record. The most bizarre part? It may have fallen much farther.
Fisher blasted the front nine holes with seven birdies and two pars, and he blasted the back nine with four consecutive birdies to reach 11 under with three holes remaining. He played his second shot to four feet after hitting his tee ball on the par-4 18th hole just short of the green. Fisher, however, missed the easy birdie putt for a 60 and had to settle for a 61.
The Old Course record of 62 was previously held by Curtis Strange, Brian Davis, and six other people. Only Fisher has ever shot 61 in a competitive round at St. Andrews.
It’s doubtful that anybody will beat Fisher’s course record this year given that the major championship scoring record is 63. But with calm breezes expected for the most of the week, maybe the most talented Open Championship field in history will work some magic.
